And though all the things I love

may pass away and

the great family of things and people

I have made around me

will see me go,

I feel them living in me

like a great gathering

ready to reach a greater home

When one thing dies all things

die together, and must live again

in a different way,

when one thing is missing everything is missing,

and must be found again

in a new whole

and everything wants to be complete,

everything wants to go home

and the geese traveling south

are like the shadow of my breath

flying into darkness

on great heart-beats

to an unknown land where I belong

~Excerpt from What I Must Tell Myself by David Whyte

As we approach 2013 I am contemplating the things in my life that have died, both physical and nonphysical. The sadness and pain that goes along with death of someone you love, a beloved pet, or even an ingrained thought pattern, is scary and overwhelming. In 2013 I am saying goodbye to the things that have passed, in the past, and learning how to “live again, in a different way.”

Happy New Year!

Recently while I was driving I saw a sign graffitied on a bridge:

KILL GREED

Ironically, there was a peace sign drawn above these words. My first thought when I saw these words was, great, of course! Then I thought about it further. Kill greed…peace sign? If we want to have a more peaceful world, we cannot “fight” the aspects of the world that we find so terrible. Violence does not end violence. “Killing” greed is just as violent as greed itself.

Rather than focusing on hating greed or killing it, let’s celebrate everything that is not greed, accept that greed does exist at our present level of consciousness, and instead of railing against it, work on raising our personal consciousnesses as we move into 2013.

How about this:

LOVE IS EVERYTHING…peace sign.

Happy Winter Solstice! As we prepare for the shortest day of the year, and as some believe, the continuation of a rapid shift in consciousness for our planet, do what feels right for you. Your community may be offering meditations, workshops, or yoga classes. This is a great way to celebrate the continual evolution of our planet. You may also just want to rest at home tonight, be with family members, and stay within both physically and emotionally. However you choose to honor the Winter Solstice, I wish you love, peace, and reflection in this quiet time of the year.

“Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends” (The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien).

Having lived in Connecticut my entire life, the news of the Newtown shootings hit me incredibly hard. While I do not know anyone personally connected with the victims’ families, I do have many friends who are connected in some way. The pain is indescribable, but the peace and love that will come from this act of violence is incredible.

I truly do not believe in evil. I believe that only love is real. This is not because I have turned a blind eye to the horrific things that happen in our world, but because I do not feel I have the right to label anything or anyone as evil. My heart is with the Lanza family as well as with the families of the victims.

Today let’s look into our own hearts where we have been violent, unforgiving, angry, and judgmental. Adam Lanza represents those parts of ourselves which are darkest and in the most pain. Do not push either him or those aspects of yourself away in hatred or disgust. Bring them deeply into your consciousness and send them love, forgiveness, and peace. Only when we can achieve this will there be an end to violence.
